"You have to go to Speyer" we were told by friends in Australia. So we went to Speyer.
We wanted to meet the parents of our son's partner, Kat. They live in Germany so we arranged to meet them, with Glenn and Kat, at Speyer so that we could visit the Technik Museum (a museum of technology and transport, including space). We were a little concerned because neither of us speak German but Kat and Glenn speak English and German so we thought it would be OK. But it turned out that both of Kat's parents make a very good job at English and we had a wonderful day together at the museum and in the town.

The museum itself has an amazing collection of transport vehicles - motor bikes, cars, trains, fire engines, a jumbo jet, all sorts of aeroplanes, a U-boat submarine, racing cars and so on - but the highlight for us was the space collection featuring the Apollo program to land on the moon as well as the space shuttle and space stations. It was well worth a visit.

The beautiful town of Speyer is over 2000 years old, an impossible number of years to imagine when compared with our young cities in Australia. The cathedral is a real feature and we were in the main street when the tradition of ringing the bells at 5 pm on a Saturday evening occurred. What a fabulous sound.
