About 50 000 years ago a meteor crashed into the plain in what is now Arizona (east of Flagstaff). It has left a crater 700 feet (213 m, about a 60 story building) deep and 4000 feet (1220 m) across. The information board here stated that it is the best preserved impact site on earth and, until 1902, was thought to be volcanic in origin.
We were there late in the day and there was a lightning storm close by but we decided to go in and have a look anyway... and were surprised to see a full-blown information centre, museum and viewing platforms! (I don't know why we're still surprised about the quality of national and state parks here in the USA because they've all been outstanding.) Phil was a bit annoyed about having to pay $15 to have a look when he'd already seen one in Australia but changed his mind after he'd been in.
