Imagine trying to push your way through the crowd at Victoria Market on a Saturday morning. Imagine trying to get out of the MCG carpark after a Grand Final. Imagine the Lakes District in England at the height of the season. Imagine Sedona and the Verde Valley in Arizona on a Labor Day Weekend. It was controlled bedlam. There were cars and people everywhere in the beautiful valley, the police were standing in intersections directing traffic, there were families picnicking by and swimming in the river, cars were parked in every available space for miles along the roads and there was a very very long traffic jam to get into Sedona but luckily we were heading out. It was astonishing.
It's a beautiful area so it's probably always busy. We visited the old mining town of Jerome perched, literally, on the side of a mountain. We paid respect to the skilled people who built and lived in Montezuma Castle cliff dwelling. We delighted in the red rock mountains on either side of the valley. We admired the architecture of the houses and businesses in the towns. We left the valley thinking that we really hadn't explored it anywhere near enough. It would be a great spot to have a long holiday (provided you didn't have to get the car out of the garage).

Our (then) young family visited Sedona in 1976, and thought it was a delight.

Great GFNC meeting last night, with Mark Rodrigue giving an excellent talk on Victoria's Marine National Parks. Lots of followup questions. And the Geelong Bird Report 2009 has finally arrived.
