Dinosaur's wildlife

Oh my gosh. Dinosaur National Monument in northern Colorado wasn't on my list of things to do but we were so close (relatively speaking) we decided to go and it turned out to be pretty special.

There are two public parts to the reserve - the more popular Dinosaur Quarry area (in Utah) and the one we went to, the Canyon area (in Colorado).

I'll post some pictures of the wonderful canyons in the next blog but in the mean time here are some of the animals we saw during the day.

Six butterflies in one photo!
The noisiest grasshopper/locust I've ever heard.
These were basking in the sun at Harpers Corner, almost tame.
No idea, but it seemed to think food could be found around picnic tables.
Update: Thanks to 'Snail' I now think this is a White-tailed Ptarmigan in the grouse family - it will stay for the winter and moult to beautiful white plumage like this.
White-tailed Prairie Dog next to its burrow. This particular species is the subject of a managemnt plan.
Antelope in a distant waterhole.

  1. I think that bird might be a grouse or ptarmigan of some sort. Maybe. Perhaps.
