Idaho spuds

We chose to travel by a road less travelled, we thought, and discovered a delightful area of Idaho. (Teton to Victor on Hwy 33.)

Turns out it's a very prosperous area where potatoes and other crops grow extremely well - just add water - and being so close to the beautiful Teton Range is a huge asset because a lot of people want to visit to hike, fish and who knows what else. It's a beautiful area and we thoroughly enjoyed our drive through.

There used to be a big dam in the district, until it totally burst through the newly constructed dam wall in 1956 and flooded downstream killing 11 people and causing heaps of damage. We hadn't heard about this but after reading a 'significant site' sign we turned off to visit the site (it's never been rebuilt) and ran into a local there who told us all about the story and about the potato industry.

He was able to put us out of our misery and explain to us what the long triangular sheds were all about. They're called pole sheds and originals were built of poles and covered in earth and they were able to store potatoes in them for about nine months over the winter. The air moves through the shed in a particular way and the temperature is controlled.
