Mammoth Lakes

I know, I know. It's another Chipmunk. But they're so cute.
Mammoth Lakes buzzes all year round. It looks like the skiing and all other snow-based activities are outstanding, and in the summer there is a lot to do in the surrounding environment and in the town (the day we were there there was a jazz festival on and next weekend there will be a poetry reading event). We were tempted by a gondola ride to the top of the mountain, very tempted, but elected instead to go out to the lakes in Mammoth Lakes Basin.

Twin Lakes
Lake Mary
Several years ago Carbon Dioxide started leaking out of the ground in sections of the basin as a result of volcanic activity underground. Signs explain how dangerous it is to people and animals, and in an area near Horseshoe Lake it has killed the trees.

PS Glenn and Kat - you'd love it here. Put it on your list.

  1. I'm not sure why you're recommending a place where the air is dangerous to humans, animals and plants, but it does look nice.
